The Twinbrook Ducks are seeking a head coach for the 2020 season. The Ducks are a hard-working, motivated, fun, and enthusiastic team in the Montgomery County Swim League (MCSL). We have approximately 120 swimmers from beginners to year-round swim team members. In the best way possible, summer swim team is a family affair as many of our swimmers come from multi-swimmer families and our parents show up, volunteer, and are humbled by the skills of our kids and their coaches. We are very excited to have moved up two divisions last season and we eagerly anticipate a challenging 2020 season as we compete in Division M.

Requirements for the Head Coach:

  • Previous coaching experience (swim coaching preferred).
  • Committed to fostering a lifetime commitment to a healthy lifestyle through swimming and exercise.
  • Ability to encourage sportsmanship, positive team spirit, and a sense of community and friendship.
  • Positive attitude, including an ability to provide constructive feedback for young swimmers and build self-esteem through personal growth.
  • Strong mentoring skills including team building, enthusiasm, and fun.
  • Ability to effectively engage and communicate with different “customers” (i.e., parents, team reps, swimmers, coaching staff) by email, by phone, and in person.
  • Ability to drive to meets and practices.
  • Access to email and a computer.
  • Capability to coach different skill levels from basic to advanced.
  • Capability to work with young athletes age 5-18.
  • Familiarity with MCSL policies, rules, and procedures preferred.
  • Lifeguarding and CPR certification preferred but not required.

Primary Responsibilities for the Head Coach:

  • Evaluate swimmers’ skills in order to bring out the best of each swimmer and help them meet goals.
  • Read, apply, and support all aspects of the Twinbrook Ducks handbook, policies, and mission.
  • Instruct swimmers in all four competitive strokes as well as starts and turns.
  • Create swim practices that focus on motivation, skill-building, improvement, and fun.
  • Willingly work with parent volunteers and swim team reps.
  • Manage and train coaching staff.
  • Coach two morning and four evening practices each week from Memorial Day—May 26th through All-Star weekend (July 26th)–once school ends the Wednesday night practice is replaced with B meet. Morning practices start once school is out through July 17th.
  • Coordinate and execute team Time Trials and swimmer evaluations.
  • Enthusiastically participate in pre-season parents meeting and other pre-season planning as requested.
  • Utilize the team’s electronic swim meet system (Swimtopia) to create weekly line-ups for A and B meets, Relay Carnival, and Divisionals.
  • Manage and coordinate team at the weekly A and B meets, Relay Carnival, Divisionals, and All-Star meet.
  • Enthusiastically help recognize all our swimmers’ accomplishments with ribbons and special end-of-season awards.

Time Commitments:

  • Evening weekday practices from 5:00-7:00 p.m. starting May 26th (Monday, Tuesday, Thursdays and Fridays).
  • Morning weekday practices from 9:00-10:30 a.m. (frequency and days TBD) once the school year is complete through July 17th.
  • Saturday morning A meets (approximately 7:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.).
  • Wednesday evening B meets (5 scheduled from approximately 5:30-9:00 p.m.).
  • Divisionals Meet on July 18, 2020.
  • Relay Carnival (date TBD).
  • Spirit activities including pep rallies and the end of year swim banquet (most likely on July 18th).
  • Prep time for these activities.

Why coach for us?

  • Our kids swim with their hearts no matter the score or the skill.
  • Our parent volunteers show up and rarely need to be asked to help.
  • Everyone pitches in to make summer swim part of the “best summer memories” a swimmer and family can have.
  • We moved up two divisions after being at Division O for many years and are excited by new challenges.
  • Our team loves, appreciates, and performs for their coaches.
  • We have a great underdog story.
  • We offer a competitive salary based on experience.

Please note that coaches will be required to go through a background check for employment. Our home pool is the Twinbrook Swimming Pool at 13027 Atlantic Ave, Rockville, MD 20851. While all practices and social events are held at the Twinbrook Swimming Pool, all meets are hosted by other area pools due to our pool not conforming to MCSL size regulations.
